Breastfeeding protects infants against diarrhea compared with formula-fed babies; compared to formula-fed peers, death rates due to diarrhea in breastfed infants are lower irrespective of the development level of the country. The WHO did a meta-analysis that presented evidence that breastfeeding in the first 6 months can protect infants from dying of diarrhea.
